100 Noção formed in Rio de Janeiro's favelas, started by three childhood friends: MC Marechal, DJ Dominique, and DJ Primo. Their debut album 'Na Batida da Comunidade' came out in 2003. The track 'Volta Pra Mim' from that record caught on as a breakout hit.
Their music mixed samba with funk and hip-hop, which drew some criticism from traditionalists who felt they were diluting samba. They kept at it anyway, putting out albums like 'Universo 100 Noção' in 2005 and 'Samba, Funk e Coração' in 2010. Other songs in their catalog include 'A Noite Perfeita' and 'Lugar Verdadeiro'.
The group's lineup grew to include percussionist Nego Leo and vocalist Thaís Macedo alongside the original three. They toured regularly, playing with an energy that connected with audiences despite the debates around their sound.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
