Archive material and source history

1000 Mexicans formed in Los Angeles in 1995. They're known for a mariachi-rock version of John Williams' "Star Wars Imperial March," which appeared on their 1997 debut album. The band's name and their use of traditional instruments for a sci-fi score drew some criticism at the time, with accusations of cultural appropriation. They argued their music reflected the mixed influences of Los Angeles.

Raymundo "Ray" Macias sang and played trumpet. Luis "Louie" Pérez played electric guitar, Lorenzo "Larry" Pérez played vihuela, Roberto "Beto" Valadez played accordion, and Ricardo "Ricky" Renteria played guitarrón. They released albums like 2000's "Vive Tu Vida," 2003's "Fiesta," and 2013's "Viva la Revolución." The 2003 album included a collaboration with Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
