101 Máscaras formed in São Paulo in 2001, with Fernando Anitelli on vocals, Leonardo Marques on guitar, and Pedro Ferraz on drums. Their debut album 'Em Busca do Perdão' came out in 2005, followed by 'Enfim, Nasceres' in 2008 and 'A Queda dos Dias' in 2012.
Their music drew from post-rock, progressive metal, and Brazilian folk, creating a sound that was hard to pin down. Songs like 'Enfim, Nasceres' and 'A Crônica da Bolachinha' had a particular kind of melodic weight, with lyrics that leaned toward the introspective.
Some critics found their work too obscure or inward-looking, but the band kept at it. They released those three albums over about seven years, each one building on what came before without repeating themselves.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
