101 South formed in Nashville in 1992, originally calling themselves South 101. The group started with Joe Cates, C.J. Watson, and Brian Bunn on vocals, plus guitarist Steve Wilson, bassist Joey Z., and drummer Paul Foster. They played local honky-tonks before signing with Asylum Records.

Their self-titled debut came out in 1993 and included the song "All In The Game," which became their biggest hit. The album also had tracks like "I Can Make It Without You" and "Something New." They put out a few more records in the mid-90s, including Between Here and Gone and Higher Ground.

By 1995, Brian Bunn had left the band after a legal issue with their label. Gary Chapman joined on harmony vocals for a while, but lineup changes and disagreements eventually led to the group breaking up in 1998. They got back together for some shows in 2005, but haven't released new studio material since.
