13 Centavos formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1981, with Roger Moreira on vocals, Sergio Serra on guitar, Luiz Carlos on bass, and Carlos Alberto on drums. Their name came from the price of a bus ticket in the city at the time. They released their debut album in 1983, and its lead single "As Aparências Enganam (Da Hora)" became a hit.
That song, with its catchy melody, resonated widely. The band's lyrics sometimes addressed social issues, which led to some friction with authorities during Brazil's military regime.
After their debut, they released several more albums through the late 1980s and into 1991. The lineup saw some changes over time; Sergio Serra left in 1986 and was replaced by Léo Jaime, and Carlos Alberto departed in 1989, with Wander Taffo joining on drums. The group disbanded in 1992.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
