13 Victims formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, with Paul Bearer on vocals, Derek Grant on guitar, Greg Hetson on bass, and Dave Castillo on drums. Their debut album 'Common Fist' came out in 1984, and the title track became a hardcore staple. They followed it with records like 'The Weapon' in 1985 and 'No Peace No Justice' in 1986.
Hetson left the band in 1986 and was replaced by Ty Butcher on bass. They kept putting out albums through the decade, including 'Land of the Free' in 1988. Songs like 'One Night Of Misery' and 'Take It Away' carried their aggressive, politically charged style forward.
Their lyrics and performances sometimes drew criticism, which the band addressed by pointing to their involvement in benefit shows for various causes. They played festivals and stayed active in the punk scene well after their peak recording years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
