13 Winters formed in San Clemente, California around the turn of the millennium, with Chris Carraba on vocals and guitar, Matt Oberst on bass, and Jeff Phillips on drums. They put out their debut album 'Raining' in 2001, and its lead single 'Autumn' got some attention. The band's sound leaned into emotive, guitar-driven indie rock, with songs like 'Beauty Is The Beast' and 'Cold, Dark And Empty' following a similar moody, melodic path.
Things didn't last long. Carraba's other project, Dashboard Confessional, began taking more of his focus, and tensions grew within the group. They split up not long after their debut, leaving just that one album and a handful of songs like 'Forsaken' and 'Dark Embrace' as their recorded output.
Their story became a minor footnote in early 2000s indie rock, a band that showed some promise with 'Autumn' but dissolved before they could build on it. The album 'Raining' still turns up in conversations about that era's more introspective guitar music, even if the band itself faded quickly.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
