1814 formed in Jamaica in the early 1980s around brothers Winston and Keith McAnuff. Their music carried Rastafarian themes and social commentary, with Winston handling vocals and Keith on guitar. The band's lineup included drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Errol 'Flabba' Holt, both respected figures in Jamaican music.
They released several albums in the 1980s, including 'Ragga Dub' in 1983 and 'Nature's Call' in 1987. Their song 'Jah Rustafari' became particularly noted within reggae circles for its Rastafarian message, though it sometimes drew attention for its religious content. The track appears on their 1993 compilation 'The Best of 1814'.
Winston McAnuff died in 2019. The group's recordings from that early period remain part of Jamaica's reggae landscape from those years.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
