The band 1924 formed in Toronto around the early 2000s, with Aaron Dessner and his twin brother Bryce Dessner at the center. They were joined by Scott Thoe, Patrick Carney, and James Marshall. Their name comes from the year the Dessner brothers were born.
Their 2009 debut album 'States' got some attention from critics but didn't sell particularly well. Things changed with their second album in 2012, which was named after the song 'Busta's Lament'. That track became something of a signature piece for them, and the album won a Juno Award for Album of the Year.
Patrick Carney left the band in 2014. They kept going, releasing albums like 'The Evening Hours' in 2015 and 'Homebody' in 2019. Their lineup has shifted over time, and they've worked with other artists including Bon Iver and Taylor Swift.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
