The Brazilian rock band 1983 formed in São Paulo in 1983 with Fernando Carvalho on vocals, Sergio Mekler on guitar, Henrique Arnaldo on bass, and Gustavo Sotto on drums. Their debut album 'Escrevia Silêncios' came out the following year, and its title track became an early signature song. The group's sound drew from the moodier side of post-punk and new wave, with clear nods to artists like The Cure and Joy Division.
They released several more albums through the 1980s and 1990s, including 'Além do Olhar' and 'A Noite e o Silêncio.' The lineup shifted over time, with Sotto departing in 1986 and other musicians like Camilo Carrara and Marcelo Mokarzel joining later. Songs like 'Todos Contra Você' and 'Baile De Máscaras' kept their atmospheric, introspective style in focus.
Their music often dealt with quieter, more personal themes, which sometimes got them labeled as overly dark or gothic by critics. That reputation didn't hurt their connection with fans, who responded to the direct emotional pull in tracks like 'O Corpo' and 'The Night Makes Me Feel Better.' They put out six studio albums in total, the last being 'Tempo e Silêncio' in 2000.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
