The Brazilian rock band 1984 formed in Brasília in 1985, not 1984 as their name might suggest. They put out their first album, 'Equilíbrio Desigual,' the following year. The title track from that record became one of their most recognized songs.
Their music drew from punk and post-punk, and they often wrote about social issues. The band's lineup included Chico Science on vocals and guitar, Fred Zero Quatro on drums, Nação Zumbi on bass and vocals, and Lúcio Maia on guitar. They released several more albums through the 1990s and into the early 2000s, including 'Nação Zumbi' in 1996 and 'Afrociberdelia' in 2003.
In 1988, Chico Science was arrested after a concert in Rio de Janeiro, though the charges were later dropped. The band stopped working together in 1998.
