The band 1985 formed in Pittsburgh in 2003 around Matthew Holmes on vocals and guitar and Chris Regan on bass. They released their debut album 'Overcome' in 2007, which included the song 'Breaking Free.'
In 2009 they put out 'New Empire, Vol. 1' followed by 'New Empire, Vol. 2' in 2011. Their drummer changed in 2012 when Adam Trombetta left and Christopher Holden joined. Jake Luhrs also played guitar for the band.
Later albums included 'The Battle of the Mind' in 2014 and 'Running Out of Time' in 2018. In 2015, they objected to one of their songs being used in a political advertisement without their approval.
