1.Mai 87 formed in West Germany in 1987, led by singer and songwriter Hans-Jürgen "Hajo" Syberberg. They put out their first album, 'Angst,' the following year, and followed it with records like 'Tod im Bahnhof' and 'Süßer Traum' through the early 1990s. The band's lineup included Petra "Pete" Schürmann on bass and Michael "Mike" Szczesny on drums.
Their music had a raw, introspective quality, with lyrics that often dealt with social alienation and disillusionment. Songs like 'Angst,' 'Crackhead,' and 'Demokratie' captured a particular mood that resonated with some listeners in that period. The band's straightforward approach and thematic focus drew attention, and sometimes criticism, during their active years.
They released several more records, including 'Leere' in 1993 and 'Letzte Lieder' in 1995, before their run came to an end. While their catalog isn't extensive, it documents a specific voice in German music from that era, one that avoided polish in favor of direct expression.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
