2 Cents came out of San Francisco in the early 1990s with a raw sound that pulled from punk and grunge. Their shows sometimes got rowdy, but their music connected with people who felt left out. They put out three albums: 'The Way We Feel' in 1993, 'Nothing to Write Home About' in 1995, and 'The Last Laugh' in 1997.
In 1995, they released 'A Song for Darrell Abbott,' a tribute to their guitarist who died of a drug overdose. The song's directness about addiction and loss made it stick with listeners. Other tracks like 'Choose Your Illusion' and 'Death Vegas' showed their blunt approach to writing.
The band had Joey Cape on vocals and guitar, Tim Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Mike Dirnt on bass, and Tré Cool on drums. They toured hard and built a tight following, though their outspoken style kept them in occasional trouble with authorities.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
