2° Tenente Aurélio de Lyra Tavares was a Brazilian Army officer born in 1905 who joined the military in 1927. He served with the 1st Engineering Battalion, where his musical abilities were noticed and put to use. While stationed there, he wrote what would become his most recognized piece, 'Canção do Pontoneiro (Exército Brasileiro)', a song about bridge-builders in the army.
During the 1930 Revolution, Tavares backed the losing side and spent some time imprisoned. He kept writing military songs after that, including 'Hino do 1º Batalhão de Engenharia de Construção' and 'Marcha do 1º Regimento de Obuses'. His compositions were typically performed by Brazilian military bands like the Banda Sinfônica do Exército Brasileiro and the Coral do Exército Brasileiro.
'Canção do Pontoneiro' became something of an anthem within the Brazilian military, and Tavares's other works continued to be played by army bands and choirs. He wrote specifically for military life, focusing on units and their roles rather than broader popular themes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
