220 Volt formed in Jamaica in 1987 with Winston Brown on vocals, Lloyd Robinson on bass, and Michael Chung on drums. Their debut album 'The Harder They Come' came out in 1989, and the title track became their best-known song. They worked in a mix of reggae, dancehall, and R&B.
In 1992, bassist Lloyd Robinson drowned while swimming in a Jamaican river. The band continued after his death, with Brown as the only original member. They put out albums like 'Reckless' in 1990 and 'Straight to the Top' in 1993, and collaborated with other Jamaican artists including Beres Hammond and Buju Banton.
Their songs sometimes dealt with social issues, which led to some criticism. Other tracks from their catalog include 'Beat Of The Heart' and 'Blessed by the Night'. The band's lineup has changed over time, with musicians like Curtis Wright on bass joining later.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
