3 Al Hilo formed in 1976 with Antonio "Tony" González on vocals and percussion, Ángel "Angie" Vázquez on keyboards and vocals, and Lorenzo "Lencho" Hernández on drums and vocals. Their breakout single "Contradicción" became an instant hit that propelled them to international attention.
Their music blended salsa with pop and traditional Cuban rhythms, though they later incorporated elements of disco, funk, and rock. This experimental approach sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists who felt they were straying too far from salsa's roots. Songs like "Ella entro en el bar" and "Sólo una ilusión" show their range across different styles.
They released over 20 albums including "Tumbao y Ritmo" in 1980, "Sabor a Cuba" in 1985, and a self-titled "Contradicción" album in 1991. While the core trio remained through most of their career, the band did undergo some lineup changes over time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
