3 Bakanas formed in Salvador, Brazil in 1999 as a trio. Their debut album came out the following year, featuring the song "Bem Me Quer," which became their most recognizable track. The group included vocalist Denny, bassist Manno Góes, and guitarist Marquinho Osó.
They put out a few more albums over the next several years, including a live recording in 2002 and a third studio album in 2005. A 2014 release marked their 15th anniversary. Their music was part of the Axé scene, a style that mixes Brazilian rhythms with pop.
Like many bands, they had their share of internal tensions and outside pressures. Denny dealt with substance abuse issues that affected the group at times. There were also legal disputes with former associates and disagreements about the band's direction.
They stopped being active at some point, though their songs like "Foi Só Um Ficar" and especially "Bem Me Quer" still get played. The music holds up as a particular moment in that regional sound from the early 2000s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
