3-2 Get Funky formed in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1991 with singer José Luis "Joe" Rivera, percussionist Gamaliel "Little G" Mercado, and bassist Ricardo "Ricky" Rivera. They released their debut album "Déjate Llevar" the following year, working in a mix of salsa, merengue, and funk.
Their 1994 album "Funk Happens" included the single "Si Ya No Estás," which became a hit across Latin America. Other songs like "La Llave de Tu Corazón" and "Sin Ti" followed a similar pattern of romantic ballads set to danceable rhythms.
In 1997, Rivera and Mercado were arrested for drug possession, which led to the band temporarily breaking up. After they served their sentences, the group reunited and continued recording through the 2000s with albums like "El Regreso" and "Si Yo Pudiera."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
