3 Nós formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s with three members: José Carlos Costa Netto (Zé Carlos) on lead vocals and guitar, Mário Reis on harmonica and backing vocals, and Alberto João Amorim (Beto) on percussion and backing vocals. Their debut album in 1981 included the song 'O Menino e o Balão,' which became their most recognizable track.
They released several albums through the 1980s, including 'Coisas do Mundo' in 1982 and 'Pra Sempre' in 1986. In 2002, they recorded an acoustic session for MTV. Other songs in their catalog include 'Vai Vai Coração,' 'Hit de Bob,' and 'Indecisão.'
Early on, some record labels thought their music was too soft, but they kept playing in small venues. Their sound mixed guitar, harmonica, and percussion with straightforward, often sentimental lyrics. They built a following without much flash or dramatic reinvention.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
