33graus formed in São Paulo in 1997, with Maurício Takara on vocals, Fernando Quesada on guitar, and Vanessa Bruno on bass. Their self-titled debut album came out in 2000, and the title track '33ºGrAuS' became a hit. The band's music often carried a melancholic tone, which drew some criticism for being too sad, but they kept working on their own terms.
They released several more albums, including 'Fôlego' in 2003 and 'Rumo ao Leste' in 2006, where they started weaving in more rock, pop, and electronic textures. Songs like 'Jogo da Vida' and 'Longe de Mim' show that introspective quality they became known for. In 2005, Takara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, had surgery, and continued performing.
The lineup grew to include Daniel Peixoto on drums and Pedro Peixoto on keyboards. They've worked with other Brazilian artists like Adriana Calcanhotto and Marisa Monte. Their most recent album, 'Sobre Nós', came out in 2019.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
