36 formed in Tokyo in 2004 with Kazuya Shinagawa on vocals, Kyosuke Shigeno on bass, and Hiroshi Morikawa on guitar. Their debut single "Paperback" came out in 2007 and became a hit. They released albums like 36 in 2009, COLORS in 2011, and TIDA in 2016.
Shinagawa's struggles with depression and anxiety led to some breaks in the band's activity. They also faced plagiarism allegations, which they denied. The lineup expanded over time, adding drummer Ryosuke Nishiwaki in 2014 and keyboardist Tetsuya Ando in 2016.
Songs like "Paperback" and "Vic" show their melodic rock style with introspective lyrics. They kept recording through the 2010s, putting out REVERSAL in 2013 and 10 in 2019.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
