38 Special formed in Jacksonville, Florida in the late 1970s, with Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant as frontmen. Their sound pulled from Southern rock, country, and blues. Their debut album came out in 1977, and 'Hold On Loosely' helped push them to national attention.
They had a string of hits through the 1980s, including 'Caught Up In You' and 'Second Chance'.
The band faced lineup changes and internal conflicts in the early 1990s, including the departure of founding bassist Larry Junstrom. They kept recording and performing, putting out albums like 'Resolution' in 1997 and 'Drivetrain' in 1999. In 2014, they were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
Don Barnes remains with the band, joined by longtime members Danny Chauncey, Gary Moffatt, and Bobby Capps. They still perform live, drawing on songs like 'If I'd Been The One' and 'Teacher, Teacher' from their catalog.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
