4 Ases e 1 Coringa formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1990 with vocalists Guti and Paulão, DJ 100, guitarist Jeff, and percussionist Márcio. Their debut album 'Devagar Não Faz Poeira' came out in 1992, and its title track became a hit that captured something of favela life with its raw lyrics and energetic grooves.
Their music often addressed issues like poverty and police brutality, which sparked discussions but also drew criticism from conservative groups. Songs like 'O Mundo É Um Pandeiro' and 'Patrulha Musical' carried that socially conscious edge while keeping people dancing.
They released several albums through the mid-1990s including 'O Baile do Boliviano' in 1993 and 'Tô de Frente com a Vida' in 1994. Their sound blended funk with samba rhythms in a way that felt distinctly Rio.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
