40 Foot Echo formed in Sarasota, Florida around 2004 with Zach Blount on vocals and guitar, Ross Martin on bass, and Brian Phillips on drums. They signed with Tooth & Nail Records a few years later and put out their debut EP, 'The Forsaken,' in 2007. Their sound leaned into alternative rock with atmospheric touches, and songs like 'Beside Me' and 'Save Me' became some of their better-known tracks.

They released a few albums after that, including 'Surface to Air' in 2008 and 'Paper Wings' in 2010. The band's music often worked with introspective lyrics and ethereal melodies, which connected with a particular slice of the indie rock audience at the time. They kept at it into the 2010s with records like 'Lycanthropy' and 'Drive.'
