40 Watt Sun formed in Austin, Texas in 2001, with Patrick Walker on vocals and guitar, Kevin Collins on bass, and Matt Resnik on drums. Their 2004 album 'The Way the Light Fades' brought them some attention, with songs like 'Carry Me Home' and 'This Alone' showing Walker's tendency toward personal, introspective lyrics.
Collins left in 2006 and Resnik in 2009, leaving Walker as the consistent member through various lineup changes. The band released 'Northern Lights' in 2006 and 'The Inside Room' in 2009, then returned after a break with 2012's 'Wide Awake', which had a more atmospheric sound than their earlier work.
In 2021, they put out 'The Way the Light Fades (Redux)', a re-recorded version of that first album. Walker's writing has always leaned toward themes of isolation and mental health, which connected with a particular audience even as it drew some criticism for being too dark.
