41 Down formed in London in 1988, with Mark Worthington on vocals and guitarists Paul Collins and Keith Walford. Their debut album 'Hover' came out in 1990, and the title track became a staple of their live sets. They followed it with albums like 'Aftermath' in 1992 and 'Equilibrium' in 1994, which included the single 'Broken Wings'.
Worthington left the band in 2002 to work on solo material. Before that, Collins and Walford had also departed, replaced at different points by guitarists Andy Powell and Tom Bailey. Songs like 'Lonely Position Of Neutral' and 'True Parallels' show the melodic rock style they were known for.
Their lyrics sometimes dealt with personal struggles, which drew attention. They put out 'The Art of Falling Apart' in 1997, a record that leaned into darker, more experimental territory compared to their earlier work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
