42 Eternal came out of the New York underground in the early 1990s. Their debut album, 'Cheap Thrill,' arrived in 1993 with a raw, defiant sound that caught attention. The title track became something of an anthem, and the record did well commercially.
Marcy Cole sang lead with a sultry voice, and Ashley Slater played guitar and wrote much of the material. Derek Miller was on bass and Michael Riley on drums. They put out a few more albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, including 'Easy Girls' in 1996 and 'Unbreakable' in 2002. Their lyrics sometimes touched on sexuality and addiction, which drew both praise and criticism.
By 2005 they had released what turned out to be their final album, 'The Last Goodbye.' Their music had an edge that resonated with a certain crowd, and songs like 'The World Has Gone Crazy' and 'Too Weird, Too Normal' kept that energy alive. They were a band of their moment, loud and unapologetic, and they left behind a handful of records that still get played.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
