4mula1 came out of Compton in the early 2000s with a sound that mixed hip-hop, rock, and funk. Their debut album 'Ghetto Desperado' arrived in 2001, and the title track became something of an anthem for listeners who recognized its depiction of street life. The band's lineup included Jerome Cooper (J-Liquor) on vocals, Jameel Roberts (J-Roc) on bass, Carlos Chairez (Lil' 50 Cent) on drums, and David Johnson (DJ Death) on turntables.
They followed up with albums like 'Welcome to the Jungle' in 2004 and 'The Redemption' in 2007. Songs like 'Gotta Roll' carried the same gritty, bass-heavy energy that defined their earlier work. Their live shows were known for being intense and raw, which helped build their reputation on the underground circuit.
Their lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too explicit about violence and drugs, but the band maintained they were just describing what they saw around them. They kept recording and touring through the 2010s, putting out 'Rise from the Ashes' in 2010 and 'Unfinished Business' in 2013.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
