5 Chinese Brothers formed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 2005 with David Wax, Suz Slezak, Sam Harding, Griffin Coombs, and John Paul Moran. They put out albums like their self-titled debut in 2006, followed by "This Perfect World" in 2008 and "The Ballad of the Broken Sea" in 2012.
Their sound mixed folk and rock with Wax and Slezak's vocals over guitar and cello lines. Songs like "A Lot of Nights" and "Baltimore" from their catalog show their approach to storytelling through music.
They worked with other artists including Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and the National at different points. The band's recordings have a certain atmospheric quality, partly from Slezak's cello playing alongside the guitar work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
