5 Nós came together in Salvador, Brazil, with Dudu on vocals, Vitor on guitar, Branco on drums, Junior on bass, and Manú on percussion. Their sound pulls from reggae and funk, with local rhythms mixed in. They put out their first album in 1996, followed by records like 'Surge' in 1999 and 'Tribo do Reggae' in 2002.
In 2006, the song 'Kanabiais' from their album 'Rasta Reggae' caught on widely. Its lyrics about marijuana legalization drew attention and some pushback, but the band kept playing it. Other tracks like 'Clips e Clichês' and 'Consumantes' show their style, which leans on groove and straightforward singing.
They released 'Mais Uma Vez' in 2010 and 'Nossa História' in 2016. In 2019, they put out 'Kanabaias,' a collection that included a new take on 'Kanabiais.' The record came around their 25th year together.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
