54.40 formed in Vancouver in 1981. The band's lineup has stayed fairly consistent with Neil Osborne on vocals and guitar, Brad Merritt on drums, Phil Comparelli on guitar, Dave Genn on bass, and Matt Johnson on keyboards and saxophone. They put out albums like 'Shakespeare's Sister' in 1985 and 'Emotional Release' in 1993.
Their song 'A Big Idea' became a well-known track for them. Other songs in their catalog include 'Baby Ran' and 'Alcohol Heart'. They won a Juno Award for Group of the Year in 1995.
In the early 1990s, they dealt with some legal issues over songwriting credits. They kept recording through it, putting out albums like 'Yes Virginia' in 1999 and 'Crossing the Mountain' in 2008.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
