55 Escape formed in Calgary in 2001 with Andy Shauf on bass and vocals, Darryl Kissick on guitar and vocals, Matt Warburton on drums, and Nick Noorani on keyboards. They put out their first album, 'For Now, I Am Winter,' in 2005. The song '20 Years' from that record got some attention in Canada and elsewhere, with its themes of nostalgia and time passing. They had a few other tracks like 'Addiction' and 'Burn' that showed up in their setlists.
They released two more albums, a self-titled one in 2008 and 'Collapse' in 2012, before calling it quits in 2013. The band's sound had some pop and rock elements, with a bit of folk and electronic influence mixed in. They worked independently for a stretch after 2007, which meant handling their own business without a label's backing.
While they never became a household name, '20 Years' stuck around on playlists and radio after they were done. It's the song people tend to remember when the band's name comes up.
