56K formed in 2003 with Richard Madden on vocals and guitar, Andrew Lowther on bass, and Lee Johnson on drums. Their name came from the sound of a dial-up modem. They released their debut album 'Mono' in 2004, which included their version of The Duran Duran song 'Save A Prayer.'
That cover became their breakout track, known for its atmospheric and melancholic feel. The band put out two more albums, 'The Pale Horse' in 2006 and 'The Empire of Death' in 2009. The latter had a song called 'The Wolves Are Outside' that showed a darker, more experimental side.
Madden wrote most of the material, with lyrics that often touched on isolation and loss. The group disbanded in 2011 after some personal struggles and creative differences. Their take on 'Save A Prayer' has stuck around as a quietly haunting piece from that early 2000s period.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
