5Chá formed in Belo Horizonte in the late 1990s. Their name comes from the Portuguese phrase for 'five teacups,' which they say reflects their interest in conversation and creativity. Their debut album 'Música Pra Você' came out in 2005, and its title track became a hit in Brazil.
That album brought them wider attention, though some critics questioned whether their mix of rock, pop, and samba felt forced. The band kept working, putting out records like '5Chá' in 2007 and 'Impulsivamente' in 2009. They've played festivals and worked with artists like Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte.
The group includes Marcos Almeida on vocals and guitars, Winnie Dias on drums and vocals, Felipe Zanuttini on keyboards and vocals, Daniel Sanches on sitar, bass, and vocals, and Felipe Ribeiro on acoustic guitar and vocals. Their sound has stayed hard to pin down, which has kept them interesting to listeners who like something a little different.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
