7 Dollar Taxi formed in 2001 with John Stirratt on vocals and guitar, Eric Johnson on lead guitar, Brian Hunter on bass, and Jeff Coleman on drums. They released their debut album 'Behind the Sun' in 2004, which included the song 'It Ain't Time to Say Goodbye' that became one of their better-known tracks.
In 2008, bassist Brian Hunter left the band and was replaced by Chris Phillips. They went on to release three more albums: 'Dying of the Light' in 2006, 'The Pink Album' in 2009, and 'Time to Play' in 2012. Their catalog includes songs like 'Adam,' 'Do The Robot,' and 'Kings of the Universe.'
Their music moved from folk-rock toward a more polished sound that incorporated pop and Americana elements. The band's lineup remained stable after Phillips joined, with Stirratt, Johnson, Coleman, and Phillips continuing to work together through their 2012 release.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
