The 740 Boyz were a hip-hop group from Columbus, Ohio, named after their area code. They formed in the early 1990s with rappers Big Baby D, Lil' J, Chilly B, and Smooth B. In 1994, their debut single "Shimmy Shake" became a hit, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's catchy beat made it a staple on radio and in clubs at the time.
After Lil' J and Smooth B left in 1997 to go solo, Big Baby D and Chilly B kept the group going with other rappers.
By the early 2000s, the 740 Boyz had faded from the mainstream, though they put out a few more records. Their story is mostly remembered for that one big song and the lineup changes that followed.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
