7a3 came out of Texas with a sound that didn't fit neatly into one box. Their early single "12 Bouldin, The Other 12 Ince" gave listeners a first taste of what they were doing, mixing alternative rock with country and folk touches. The band was built around vocalist Justin Furstenfeld, guitarist Alex Francis, bassist J.P. Monge, and drummer Cameron Hood.

They put out their first album, The Long Way Around, in 2003. Furstenfeld's lyrics, which often drew from personal experience, became a central part of their music.
