Background notes

Archive material and source history

801 T.T.S. Airbats formed in 1999, led by vocalist and guitarist Gota. The band's name always felt like a bit of a code, never fully explained. They put out songs like '50,000 Feet No Blue Bird' and 'Hidamari,' which had a certain floating, atmospheric quality to them. Their sound wasn't quite rock, not quite electronica, but something in between that drew a specific kind of listener.

In 2003, they released the album that included '50,000 Feet No Blue Bird,' which became their best-known track. The lineup around that time included bassist Mikki and drummer Xaki. They worked with other artists occasionally, including pianist Yoko Kanno. The music wasn't for everyone, some found it too detached or abstract, but it found its audience.

The band stopped working together in 2009. Songs like 'Niji Ni Naritai' and 'Twilight Flight' are still out there, the kind of thing you might stumble across in a certain mood. They made a particular kind of quiet, skyward-looking music that some people still return to.
