Background notes

Archive material and source history

9-Ball was a Los Angeles alternative rock band that formed in the mid-1990s. The group took its name from a billiards term, which fit their somewhat unpredictable approach to music. They were led by singer and guitarist John Kastner, with Paul Marstinez on bass and Matt Cameron on drums.

Their sound drew from the grunge and Britpop currents of the time, with bands like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins serving as touchstones. They released albums including "9-Ball" in 1995, "Time to Burn" in 1997, and "Lost Souls" in 2000.

9-Ball is best remembered for the song "How Do You Dream," which became their most recognizable track. The band broke up in 2003, and the members moved on to other projects.
