Background notes

Archive material and source history

9º Andar formed in São Paulo in 1980 with Claudio Velasquez on vocals, Fabio Gasparini and André Christovam on guitars, Luiz Carlos Maluly on bass, and Christiano Rocha on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1983, and the single 'Ei Você' caught on with Brazilian rock listeners.

In 1988, the band released a song called 'Allah-La Akbar' that drew criticism from some Muslim groups for its lyrics about the Iranian regime. They ended up pulling it from circulation. Other tracks from their catalog include 'Sorte Pra Te Olhar' and 'Tempo de Ser Feliz'.

They kept making records through the 1990s and 2000s, shifting their sound toward alternative rock and grunge at times. Their later work didn't reach the same commercial level as their early material, but they maintained a following in Brazil's rock scene.
