Archive material and source history
A Little Shop of Horrors began as a musical adaptation of Roger Corman's 1960 low-budget horror film. Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman turned it into an Off-Broadway show that premiered in 1982, following a timid florist named Seymour Krelborn who discovers a carnivorous plant.
The plant, named Audrey II and voiced by Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops, develops an appetite for human flesh. The story includes Seymour's love interest Audrey Fulquard, his boss Mr. Mushnik, and a Greek chorus called The Ronettes. One of the show's songs is "Suppertime."
The original cast recording came out in 1982. In 1985, Jack Nicholson's estate sued Warner Bros. over promotional use of his likeness, settling out of court.
