Background notes

Archive material and source history

A Plus F and MJG were a Southern hip-hop duo who worked together in the early to mid-1990s. Their song "What You Weigh Me" appeared on their 1994 album "No More Mr. Nice Guy." The track became their most recognizable work, a straightforward rap song that found an audience without much radio push.

Antoine McCurdy, who performed as A Plus F, and Marlon Jermaine Goodwin, who performed as MJG, released their debut album "Supa Gangsta, Supa Ho" in 1992. They followed it with "Comin' From Da Hood" in 1996. Their music had a gritty, unpolished quality that fit with other Southern rap coming out at the time.

In 1996, McCurdy was involved in a shooting incident that led to attempted murder charges and some time in jail. Goodwin dealt with substance abuse issues that affected his work. These personal troubles coincided with the end of their active period as a duo. Their catalog, particularly "What You Weigh Me," still gets played by fans of that era's regional hip-hop.
