A Princesa e o Sapo formed in the early 2000s with Marcello Salazar on vocals, guitarists Bruno Dantas and Rafael de Almeida, bassist Wilson Gomes, and drummer Rodrigo Caldas. They came together after another musical project ended, and spent those first years working through lineup changes and financial pressures while developing their material.
In 2005 they released their debut album 'Cavando Mais Fundo,' which included the title track that became their breakthrough. That song, along with others like 'Quase lá' and 'Lá Em Nova Orleans,' showed Salazar's introspective writing style over arrangements that mixed Brazilian MPB and samba with rock and folk elements.
The band's sound drew from Brazilian artists like Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque as well as international figures such as Bob Dylan. Their recordings featured Salazar's rich vocal delivery and the group's tight instrumental work, heard on tracks like 'Evangeline' and 'Amigos do Outro Lado.'
