A Ramilie formed in 1988 with Ramli Sarip and M. Nasir handling vocals and songwriting, joined by Joey Bimbo on keyboards, Saidatulnisa Said on bass, and Yazid Ibrahim on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year. The band's sound mixed traditional Malay melodies with straightforward pop arrangements, which connected with listeners across Malaysia.
Their 1990 song "Bunga Kembang" became a defining hit, its melody and lyrics about love and longing sticking with people long after its release. Other tracks like "Hidup Bersama" and "Kunanti Kau Pulang" followed a similar emotional vein. The band's lyrics sometimes touched on social themes that drew occasional criticism.
In 1991, a legal dispute over "Bunga Kembang" led to M. Nasir leaving the group to work on his own material. A Ramilie continued recording for a time, but that early lineup with both Ramli Sarip and M. Nasir writing songs together was essentially over.
