Archive material and source history
Abdel Kader is the stage name of Abdelkader Chaou, born in 1964 in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria. He came up playing in local bands before joining the folk group Ideflawen, where he toured and performed with other Algerian musicians.
He went solo in 1992 with his debut album "Ya Rayah." His song "Algérien" became something of an anthem, especially among Algerians living abroad. The track appears on his album of the same name.
His music draws from Kabyle folk and Rai traditions, though he's worked in a more contemporary style at times. He's been known to address social and political topics in his lyrics, which has occasionally stirred some debate back home.
