Abdom Rodrigues Cavalcante was born in Marataízes, Espírito Santo, in 1949. He grew up around the traditional music of the Capixaba region, drawing from styles like modinha, samba, and choro.
In 1975, he wrote and released 'Canção do Soldado Capixaba,' a song about soldiers from Espírito Santo who fought in the Paraguayan War. It became a local anthem. That song helped build a following for him, and he toured Brazil performing his own material and other Capixaba songs.
He was known for being outspoken about preserving traditional music, which sometimes put him at odds with people pushing for more modern sounds. He kept at it anyway.
