Abidjan formed in the late 1960s in the Ivory Coast city they're named after, with N'Guess Bon Sens on vocals, Souleymane Traore on guitar, Aboulaye Traore on bass, and Souleymane Karamoko on drums. They worked with Brazilian artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, which gave their music a particular cross-Atlantic feel.
Their 1975 album "Evidence" included the song "Será Que É Sonho Meu?" (Is It Just My Dream?), a ballad that got some attention. Other tracks people remember include "Não Soubemos Amar," "Me Conte O Que Que Há," and "O Sonho."
They mixed West African percussion with Brazilian samba rhythms, which was less common at the time. The sound was mostly built around Bon Sens's vocals and that specific instrumental lineup.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
