Abir is a quartet from Buenos Aires that formed in the early 2000s around violinist Pedro Lanza and guitarist Andrés Linetzky. They play tango with contemporary touches, sometimes bringing in elements from jazz or rock. Their lineup has stayed consistent with Lanza and Linetzky joined by bassist Jorge Retamoza and bandoneon player Lautaro Greco.
Their first album, "Callejón," came out in 2004. Later records like "Lumbre" and "Gotan" followed. Some of their songs include "Inferno," "Tango," and "Galleria." They've worked with other musicians like vocalist Jane Monheit and songwriter Jorge Drexler.
They've played live regularly, and their recordings show the group's tight interplay. The music doesn't stick strictly to traditional tango forms, which drew some early skepticism from purists. But they kept at it, building a catalog that leans into mood and rhythm without abandoning the genre's core feeling.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
