Abstürzende Brieftauben formed in Leipzig in 1979, with Alexander Hacke on bass, Mark Chung on guitar and vocals, and F.M. Einheit on drums. They moved to West Germany and later added Heidenhain on guitar and Eva Gössling on vocals. Their 1980 track 'Im Strandbad' became something of a punk anthem, with its raw energy and Chung's guttural delivery.
Their sound mixed punk with industrial elements, heard on songs like 'Allein' and 'Amok' from their early 1980s work. The band released several albums including 'Der Sonne entgegen' in 1981 and 'Hai-Alarm' in 1982. Their performances sometimes faced bans, but they kept playing their particular brand of German punk.
After the band ended, Hacke went on to work with Einstürzende Neubauten and other artists. Chung released solo albums like 'Durch die Wüste' in 1983. Their music, especially tracks like 'Betzy Freitag' and 'Das Grauen kehrt zurück', still gets played by people who like that early 80s German punk sound.
